How Can International Students Live And Work In Canada After Graduation?

HOME OFFICE TO LAUNCH NEXT GENERATION BRP UK IMMIGRATION NEWS 2021 UPDATE

Post-Graduation Work Permits, or PGWP, are for international students who wish to live and build a career in Canada after completing graduation from a Canadian institute.

International students can continue to live in Canada and start a new life there after graduating from a post-secondary educational program with the help of the Post-Graduation Work Permit program.

The PGWP program gives international students an open work permit for three years, enabling them to work for a Canadian employer without any restrictions after graduating from a Canadian designated learning institution, or DLI. Under this program, students do not need a job offer while submitting their application. Plus, they can choose to work for any employer.

It should be noted that although this program gives permits extending to up to three years, the actual length of an applicant’s permit depends on the duration of their educational program.

Application Process For The Post-Graduation Open Work Permit

Here’s the thing, you can apply for a post-graduation work permit on the same day you get your official transcript and the letter confirming your graduation.

In case you are wondering, prospective applicants interested in obtaining a post-graduation work permit have up to 180 days to apply after finishing their studies.

According to the information provided on the website of the Canadian government, here’s a list of documents that an applicant has to include in their application for the PGWP.

  • A degree or diploma
  • An official transcript or a copy of your transcript from your institute’s website
  • An official letter from your institute

However, IRCC can ask you to submit more documents after receiving your application.

Now the next step depends on whether an applicant is applying for the post-graduation open work permit from Canada or some other country. While the majority of applicants are required to submit their applications online, some are often asked for paper applications.

International students in Canada may be required to submit online or paper applications depending on their specific circumstances. The same goes for the ones applying from outside Canada.

Visit the official website of the Government of Canada for more information.
