On 27 June 2023, Sean Fraser announced that the Canadian government is implementing a short-term policy to allow temporary foreign workers to indulge in full or part-time studies without obtaining a Study Permit. Plus, there are no restrictions on the duration of their chosen program of study.
Overseas workers who have a valid Work Permit and applied to extend the current one before 7 June 2023 can use this temporary measure to their advantage. Foreign workers will not be eligible for this policy If the work permit or extension application was submitted on or after 8 June 2023. This policy became effective immediately with a life of three years.
As a result of this new three-year policy permits, temporary foreign workers can opt for any study program without any limitations or the need to apply for a new Work Permit. However, they will need to go for a Study Permit to continue studying after their existing Work Permit expires.
