The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has made some big changes to the eligibility criteria for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). It has happened mostly due to the challenges faced after the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the past, international students were only able to complete about 50% of their studies online to become eligible for PGWP. But after the pandemic when travel restrictions happened, things changed.
IRRC has adjusted the regulations and now students who have completed less than 50% of their PGWP studies away from Canada are eligible for PGWP until December 31, 2023.
Who Benefits From These Changes?
The students who have enrolled in PGWP-eligible programs from March 2020 to August 31, 2022, are the ones who get the most benefits. The ones who started studying overseas prior to August 31, 2022, can count the entire duration for PGWP eligibility. Now those who are starting off between September 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023, will follow the latest time frame.
The Value of PGWP
The PGWP is an open work permit for international students who are done with their studies in Canada. PGWP allows them to work under any Canadian employer. The permits last around three years. Moreover, PWGP also offers the perk to secure permanent residency.
