Australia Extended Grace Period for Job Changes on Skilled Visas

It was observed that the Australian government has extended the grace period for job transitions for holders of certain skilled visas, making it easier for them to navigate employment changes.

Key Updates on Skilled Visas

 

  1. Extended Grace Period for Visa Holders

Starting July 1, visa holders of the Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa (subclass 457), Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (subclass 482), and Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 494) can now take up to 180 consecutive days, or a total of 365 days over their visa period, to find new sponsorship, apply for a different visa, or arrange to leave the country. This is a significant increase from the previous 60 consecutive days.

  1. Flexibility in Employment

The new policy permits visa holders to seek employment with other employers, even in different job categories from their current sponsorship. This change applies to both current visa holders and those who receive their visas on or after July 1.

  1. Sponsor Responsibilities Remain Unchanged

Despite these updates, sponsoring employers must still notify the Department of Home Affairs of any changes in their sponsored workers’ employment status within 28 days. Additionally, visa holders must continue to adhere to mandatory licenses, registrations, or memberships specific to their occupations.
