Learning culinary art is quite popular among international students in Australia since it allows them to go for permanent residency. At the end of the day, what matters is acquiring a skill for a profession with high demand in Australia.
Studying culinary art is commonly considered by international students because they can easily find a paid job without putting their education on hold.
Now, let’s talk about the steps students need to follow to take advantage of the growing demand for qualified chefs in Australia;
- First, you have to submit an application for a student visa and take up a relevant course listed on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List or MLTSSL, such as commercial cookery.In case you are wondering, commercial cookery is a 2-year course that includes the Cert IV in Kitchen Management or Commercial Cookery and the Diploma of Hospitality. What makes it even more appealing is that it is provided in every major city in Australia.
- If you manage to complete the relevant course for at least 2 years, you will become eligible for a graduate work visa subclass 485. This is an open work visa, allowing successful applicants to live and seek employment in Australia after finishing their studies.
- The graduate work visa demands applicants to work for 12 months if they want to pass a full skill assessment via the Job Ready Program.It is important to note here that the majority of permanent work visas require a completed skill assessment. Chefs can easily acquire full skill assessment through TRA. short for Trades Recognition Australia. You have to opt for the Job Ready Program pathway via TRA. As far as the requirements are concerned, you need to have work experience of 12 months in a paid job to obtain an approved positive skills assessment for Australian immigration.
- Once you have a full skill assessment, you can go for permanent residency through General Skilled Migration Visas, which include the Skilled Regional Nominated visa subclass 491, the Skilled Independent Visa subclass 189, and the State Nominated Visa subclass 190.
You should know that this is a simplified explanation of the pathway to permanent residency for international students studying commercial cookery in Australia. We’ll soon be uploading another blog with a detailed explanation, so make sure to follow us.
