A UK visit visa is issued with a validity of 6 months, but you can also extend it to 1, 2, 5, or even 10 years. Regardless, UK visit visa holders can only stay in the country for up to 6 months on each visit.
You may apply to extend your visa for up to 6 months if your existing visit visa is valid for less than 6 months. Don’t forget this will be the time you already spent in the UK.
Similarly, you can also remain in the UK for more than 6 months under specific circumstances. For instance, you can stay in the UK for medical treatment or education purposes.
Medical Treatment
You can apply to extend your visa if you need to be in the UK for over 6 months to receive medical treatment.
You will be requested to provide various supporting documents with your application, such as letters from UK medical practitioners about your medical condition and proof that you can pay for the treatment.
The Home Office is likely to grant permission to stay in the UK for another 6 months. You may also extend your visa for longer if needed.
Academic Reasons
You can extend your visa for up to 12 months if you are in the UK on a visitor visa for education purposes. Again, the time you already spent in the UK will also be considered.
You will be required to provide proof of your high qualification in your field of expertise with your application. Moreover, you need to submit evidence that you worked in your field of expertise at an education institute abroad before coming to the UK and that you won’t be working in a permanent teaching job in the UK.
Are There Any Exceptional Circumstances To Recieve Extension?
Other circumstances in which the Home Office may be compelled to grant you an extension on your visit visa include a situation when you have to retake a Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test. You may also receive an extension if you plan to undertake a dental observer post. Whether the Home Office extends your visit visa depends on the facts and evidence you provide with your application.
