Impact on Temporary Residence Applications

Temporary residence applications, including work permits, study permits, and visitor visas, have seen the most significant rise in backlogs. The backlog for these applications increased by 4.27% from June to July 2024, making them the most affected category. In contrast, backlogs for citizenship and permanent residence applications have decreased slightly.

IRCC’s Efforts and Projections

The IRCC is implementing various measures to reduce the backlog, including expanding the use of technology and optimizing resources. Despite these efforts, the backlog is expected to persist into 2025, with projections indicating potential improvements by mid-year. The IRCC aims to meet its service standards for 80% of applications, but current trends suggest ongoing challenges, particularly for temporary residence applications.

The persistent backlog in Canada’s immigration system underscores the need for continued reforms and efficient processing strategies to meet the growing demand for immigration services
