Australia Working To Offer Easy Route To Fijians
In today’s video, we will take a brief look at the Australian government’s plans to provide an easy pathway to the Fijians and other Pacific Islanders, The Australian government is continuing to work on developing the Pacific Engagement Visa programme, as confirmed in the federal budget for 2022-23.
Pat Conroy, Minister for International Development and the Pacific, has stated that the government is dedicated to creating an easy route for travel between Fiji and Australia. The creation of the Pacific engagement visa will allow a minimum of 3,000 Pacific Islanders to immigrate to Australia every year.
The Minister also added that there are millions of visa applications that need to be processed, including thousands of applications from Fiji, and they first need to lower the backlog. He said they will speed up the application processing to allow Pacific Islanders to travel to Australia easily.
In August, an initial meeting regarding the PEV programme was held between Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Ministry of Employment Productivity and Industrial Relations.
The Australian government’s latest federal budget for 2022-23 has allocated $1.9 billion in foreign aid for the Pacific, including $88m for Fiji.
