UK Relaxes Visa Rules For Foreign Care Workers

Today’s Blog update is about International social workers, care assistants and home care workers who will soon be entitled to apply for a UK Health and Care Worker Visa.  It is anticipated that the extension of the Health and Care Worker route will permit thousands of surplus care workers to be hired to fill staff shortages within the UK’s social care sector.

The temporary rules announced by the UK Home Office are anticipated to come into effect in early 2022 and will be in effect for a at least one year.

UK’s Health And Care Worker Visa

Please note that the Health and Care Worker visa commenced in August 2020. It permits medical professionals to come to or reside in the UK to seek employment with the NHS, an NHS supplier or in adult social care.

The UK Health and Care Worker Visa can direct to settlement in the UK after 5 years if the worker stays employed.

The good news is that care workers and carers can also be accompanied by dependent partners and children.

Furthermore, the Health and Care Worker visa offers a 50% visa fee reduction. The general application fee for a Health and Care Worker visa is £232 per person for those who desire to reside in the UK for maximum of three years and £464 per person for those who desire to remain in the UK for over three years.

Please keep in mind that the UK Health and Care Worker visa applicants also get advantage from an exemption from the Immigration Health Surcharge and a rapid decision following application, with most applications administered inside 3 weeks from the date biometrics are acquired.

Changes To The UK Health And Care Worker Visa

Please note that all roles within SOC Code 6145 are to be carried forward within the scope of the visa change.

This comprises the following job titles: Care Assistant, Care Worker, Carer, Home Care Assistant, Home Carer and Support Worker (Nursing Home).

After a recent proposal by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), care workers will also be included to the shortage occupation list. This measure will necessitate carers who qualify for the Health and Care visa to be salaried at a minimum annual salary of £20,480.
