Recently, South Australia opened the 2022–2023 General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. This year, the program has issued a modified skilled occupation list, boasting that it is one of the nation’s most extensive and vast skilled occupation lists.
This year, skilled migrants as well as highly talented graduates can look for nominations from over 500 occupations. But, this was not the only creditable modification to the South Australian GSM program. More specifically, the professions being offered to overseas workers have increased significantly, from 380 occupations listed for 2021–2022 to 470 this year. This returns the numbers to the pre-pandemic period.
Visa Nominations For Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) & Skilled Regional (subclass 491)
For the 2022–2023 Skilled Migration Program, people with backgrounds in industries that are ‘in demand’ will be given priority for nominations for the SC190 and SC491 visas. These include sectors like Health, ICT, Education, Engineering, Agribusiness and Trades. Additionally, the GSM Program focuses on supporting candidates that can contribute their skills to growth industries.
Growth-industries is a name given to sectors such as Digital, Health and Life Sciences, Hi-Tech, Defence, Green Energy, Cyber Security and Space.
These changes come with the goal of nominating migrants who already live and work in South Australia. Particular priority has been placed on retaining candidates with in-demand skills while nominating skilled and experienced migrants with the aim of filling crucial labour shortages that have affected Australia since the pandemic.
Visa Nomination For Business Innovation & Investment (subclass 188)
Besides the GSM program changes, South Australia also obtained an interim allocation of 70 Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP) nomination places. These allocations came from the Department of Home Affairs to open state nominations for the BIIP program on 8 September 2022.
The appropriate measures in place for the subsequent streams are the following:
Business Innovation Stream (Subclass 188A): Interested applicants for South Australian Nomination will have to submit an Intention to Apply (ITA) to be evaluated. After the submission of the ITA enquiries, candidates who display their ability to create actual and sustainable business opportunities in South Australia may get an invitation to apply for State nomination.
Significant Investor Stream (Subclass 188C) and Investor Stream (Subclass 188B): Applications will be evaluated by analyzing each individual application on its merits while noting the broader benefit to South Australia.
Entrepreneur Stream (Subclass 188E): Candidates applying for the Entrepreneur Stream still require the endorsement of an authorised Service Provider before lodging their state nomination application.
