In the year leading up to June 2022, net migration to Scotland soared to a decade-high, reaching 48,800 compared to 22,200 the previous year. This remarkable increase is attributed to a significant rise in international migration to cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh. The National Records of Scotland (NRS) indicates that the surge is largely driven by an influx of international students.

International Student Visas Fuel Growth

The increase in migration is primarily due to a substantial rise in the number of students coming to study at Scottish universities. Esther Roughsedge, head of population and migration statistics at NRS, confirmed this trend. Notably, the number of Chinese students has seen a sharp rise, increasing from 9.5 per 1,000 in 2017/18 to 20.8 per 1,000 in 2021/22.

Additionally, net migration from the rest of the UK to Scotland rose to 12,500. UK-wide figures from the Office for National Statistics for 2023 show a net migration of 685,000, with 82% from non-EU countries. Among these, 423,000 migrants came for education, underscoring the significant role of student visas in shaping migration patterns.
