A Guide To Online Right-To-Work Checking Service

Today in this blog we will briefly examine how landlords and employers can check the right to work status of immigrants online.

Those who bear a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), Frontier Worker Permit (FWP) and Biometric Residence Card (BRC) can use the Home Office’s online checking service to establish that they have been granted permission in the UK. As a matter of fact, landlords or employers cannot examine physical documents. They are only allowed to check through the online system.

The online checking system of the Home Office has been functional since 6 April 2022. It permits employers, landlords and individuals to confirm an immigrant’s details which include information about the status of their visa.

If an individual is found living or working illegally, this system grants landlords and employers a statutory excuse against a civil penalty

To make use of the online system, people are required to share their details with the employer or landlord, or the person checking their status. Then, they have to select one of the reasons why they want to share their details, for instance, an option like ‘prove your right to work.’

After selecting the relevant option, they will get a 9-character sharing code which they can share with the relevant person. To access the information they need to check, the landlord or the employer will require the individual’s birth date and the code.

The code will remain valid for 90 days and can be used as often as required within those 90 days. However, it can only be used for the initially selected reason.

Once the landlord or the employer has the required information, they can perform the check by confirming that the visa has not expired, the information is accurate, and the individual’s photograph is also accurate.
