UK’s New Cabinet With Ethnic Minority Members in Key Roles

One of the United Kingdom’s most diverse Cabinets was unveiled by Prime Minister Liz Truss, with pivotal frontline positions presented to members of Parliament belonging to ethnic minorities. These members include Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who is of Indian origin.

The ongoing Cabinet appointing process will continue when Truss addresses her first Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) in the House of Commons.

Truss will be accompanied by Braverman, daughter of a Tamil mother from Mauritius and a Goan-origin father from Kenya, who migrated to the UK in the 1960s.

Also joining her side would be the Ghanaian-origin Kwasi Kwarteng as the United Kingdom’s first black Chancellor, as well as mixed Sierra Leone and white heritage James Cleverly as the Foreign Secretary.

The senior Conservative MPs who came forth backing the former Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership election are prominently absent in Truss’s top team, which she has loaded with close allies. Her team includes Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Therese Coffey and Wendy Morton as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury and the first Tory female Chief Whip in command of party discipline.

Alok Sharma is another Indian-origin minister in the Cabinet who will continue to retain his climate action job as COP26 President, as does Defence Secretary Ben Wallace.

Iraqi-origin Nadhim Zahawi has been designated as Chancellor of the Duchy      of Lancaster and Minister of Equalities, the new Justice Secretary is Brandon Lewis, and the Leader of the Commons is Penny Mordaunt.

In Truss’s inaugural address at Downing Street, she stated that they have vast talent, energy, and determination resources.

She stated that she’s confident and that together they can rebuild their economy, ride out the storm, and become a brilliant and modern Britain. She added that their vital mission is to provide prosperity and opportunity for all individuals and the upcoming generations.

Truss  travelled to the Balmoral Castle residence in Scotland to meet the Queen, where she was asked to build a new government.

The new Prime Minister stated that she is honoured to assume responsibility at a critical time for the country.

She added that her government would reshape Britain into an aspirational nation with jobs, secure streets, and a place where the public would receive the opportunities they deserve.
