Australia has unexpectedly approved student visa applications for over 30 Iranian Ph.D. students.
Last month’s reports revealed that hundreds of overseas students from different countries, including Pakistan, India, China, and Iran, have been waiting for three years to receive visa approvals, even after getting admission to Australian universities to start their Ph.D. education.
Now the applications of Iranian students have been approved.
According to a spokesperson for the department, the Federal Government values the role of the postgraduate research sector in boosting Australia’s reputation as a favourable country for innovative research within the international education sector. Plus, the government acknowledges its significance in promoting the country’s economic prosperity.
The spokesperson further added that Australia granted nearly 10,800 postgraduate research visas between 1 July 2022 and 28 February 2023, and most of them went to applicants from China.
In contrast, India ranked third, Pakistan eighth, and Iran ninth.
Moreover, according to a Melbourne migration agent who has also worked as an assistant secretary at the Immigration Department, many cases await processing due to security reasons.
The agent said security agencies flagged some cases as concerning, leading to prolonged delays.
