According to a recent announcement by Rishi Sunak, the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is increased by 66% from February 6. The IHS, which leaped from £624 to £1,035 a year for most migrants, is paid in a lump sum by most visa or immigration applicants who want to stay in the UK for more than six months.

Under these changes, a family of four will pay more than £3,500 a year to use the NHS while already paying the health service tax. Charities have warned that the rising rate could knock thousands of people into poverty and financial deprivation.

The increase in the standard fee comes on top of a notable hike in visa fees and other restrictions on migrants. Moreover, work and visit fees jumped by 15%, while family and settlement visas rose by 20% last October.
