New Medical Exam Rule announced by USCIS

USCIS Introduces A New Rule For Medical Exam Forms For Immigration

Green card applicants are now allowed to submit their medical exam results within two years after getting them signed by a civil surgeon.

That’s right; the 60-day rule to submit medical exam results forms for immigration after getting them signed by a civil surgeon is no longer effective since the USCIS has replaced it with a new requirement.

Please note this adjustment is applicable for every applicant filing Form I-693, which is a document an immigrant submits while applying for lawful permanent residence in the United States. It is necessary to have your Form I-693 signed by a qualified physician.

What Was The 60-Day Rule?

In case you are wondering, the previous requirement demanded applicants to have their Form I-693 signed by a civil surgeon within 60 days after filing their green card applications. Otherwise, their application could be rejected by USCIS. What’s important to note here is that this requirement proved to be an additional burden on immigrants. Plus, it increased their chances of receiving a Request for Evidence (RFE).

How Will The New Requirement Help Applicants?

The elimination of the 60-day rule means applicants will now have more time and flexibility while choosing a qualified physician to sign their medical exam forms. Moreover, the new rule is expected to help avoid unwanted delays that often occur when an applicant has to submit their documents again if they submitted them after 60 days from when the physician signed them.

The 60-day rule was supposed to improve operational efficiency and reduce the possibility of requesting applicants to submit their updated forms. However, it didn’t meet the expectations, as stated by USCIS in a press release.
