Prime Minister Rishi Sunak referred to the anti-asylum legislation as a deterrence tool. He believes the bill would discourage people from resorting to illegal means, like taking life-threatening boat rides, to migrate to the UK. Furthermore, it would prevent economic migrants from jumping the queue. According to experts and activists, the immediate effect of the policy will be that the majority of the people wouldn’t be able to claim asylum in the UK.
Julia Tinsley-Kent, policy and strategic communications manager at Migrants’ Rights Network, talked about how people cannot claim asylum while living outside the UK. She further mentioned that the UK has no visa that lets people enter the country and claim asylum. As a result, people are left with no choice but to come to the UK without permission by hiding in small boats.
