Major Changes Coming to the Australian Immigration System

Major Changes Coming to the Australian Immigration System

Later this year, Australia will see significant changes in its immigration system, particularly with the introduction of the Skills in Demand visa, which will replace the current Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa.

This new visa, valid for up to four years, aims to streamline the process for skilled workers to live and work in Australia, addressing the complex and unworkable aspects of the previous system.

Skills in Demand Visa

Set to be implemented in late 2024, the Skills in Demand visa introduces three distinct pathways:

  1. Specialist Skills Pathway: Targets high-paid professionals to drive innovation and job creation.
  2. Core Skills Pathway: Focuses on filling skill gaps across various occupations, serving as the main sponsorship option for most employers.
  3. Essential Skills Pathway: Caters to lower-paid workers in critical sectors.

Key benefits of the new visa include an extended 180-day period for visa holders to find new employment if they leave their job, and a pathway to permanent residency. The earning threshold for the Specialist and Core Skills pathways will be reviewed annually to ensure fair wages for overseas workers compared to local Australian workers.

Improvements for Employers

Employers will benefit from a consolidated occupation list for the Core Skills Pathway, making it easier and faster to sponsor workers from abroad. The government is also considering moving away from Labour Market Testing in favor of independent testing through Jobs and Skills Australia.

Points System Reform

Australia’s points system, which allows individuals to migrate without a job offer based on meeting certain criteria, is also set for reform. The proposed changes aim to:

  • Focus on characteristics that help migrants find skilled work.
  • Better target the skills Australia needs now and in the future.
  • Provide applicants with a realistic sense of their application’s likely success.
  • Recognize contributions from younger migrants and partners.

The government has tasked the Australian National University with analyzing factors that drive migrant success in Australia, aiding in these reforms. These changes collectively aim to raise living standards, ensure fair workplace practices, and strengthen Australian communities and international relationships.
