In December 2023, the Australian government introduced a new Migration Strategy in the form of a new Skills in Demand visa category. This visa category includes three distinct pathways.

They are as follows:

- Specialist Skills pathway: salary over AU$135,000
- Core Skills pathway: salary ranging from AU$70,000 to AU$135,000
- Skills in Demand pathway: salary under AU$70,000
The government has assigned Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) as part of its new visa category to conduct an analysis of the labour market and engagement of stakeholders. JSA will inform the government of the necessary occupations that are lacking in Australia’s workforce.
Recently, JSA issued a draft Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) after analyzing the ANZSCO Skill Level 1-3 occupations. These occupations will be categorized under the Core Skills pathway.

The draft CSOL has been divided into three sub-lists, and is now open for consultation. Here are the sub-lists:
- Occupations JSA is confident will be on the new Core Skills list
- Occupations JSA is confident will not be on the Core Skills list
- Occupations for further targeted consultation

It should be noted that all three lists are open for comments. However, JSA is explicitly seeking feedback from stakeholders on the targeted list, including the following:

- Independent research and labour market surveys
- The views of job seekers and national and migrant workers
