Canada’s Temporary Foreign Workers Given New Salary Measures

Canada’s Temporary Foreign Workers Given New Salary Standards

An ongoing battle over labor shortages continues in Canada, and one of the primary tactics to tackle this issue is to update immigration policies that align with the country’s requirements. One such major change was implemented in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) by introducing new salary standards. All employers must ensure that they meet the new salary requirements when providing their Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This change came into effect on January 1, 2024.

Exemptions For LMIA

However, an LMIA is not always required when hiring foreign temporary workers. According to the last amendment, which came into effect on December 15, 2022, certain categories are exempt. These categories include those that fall under federal-provincial or international agreements as well as situations considered to be in Canada’s best interest.

Varying Salaries On Occupations

According to the data from Canada’s Job Bank, there seems to be a substantial amount of variation in the average hourly pay in different occupations. Here are a few examples of hourly wages for various occupations:

– Software Engineers: CAD $51.64
– Registered Nurses: CAD $40.39
– Cooks: CAD $16

It is clearly evident from these figures that Canada’s job market has a diverse range of incomes.

Immigration Drives The Economy

Labor shortages have hit the economy hard, and according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), a potential loss of up to $38 billion is estimated for Canadian businesses. In order to tackle this labour shortage and boost the economy, the Forum of Ministers Responsible for Immigration (FMRI) has highlighted immigration as a source of importance.
