UK's Shortage Occupation is closing New Immigration Salary List Published

Migration Advisory Committee Recommends 21 Occupations on New Immigration Salary List

Declared on December 4, 2023, the new Immigration Salary List (ISL) was formulated to reduce net migration and restrict immigration abuse. The ISL will replace the UK’s Shortage Occupation List, which officially lists the skilled jobs that are facing a shortage of supply. Furthermore, the UK’s Migration Advisory Committee has recommended 21 roles be added to the ISL. Additionally, this proposal recommends increasing the general salary threshold for the Skilled Worker route and ending the “going rate” discount of 20% for occupations on the SOL.

The MAC suggested adding 11 skilled worker occupations to the ISL that were formerly included in the 2023 SOL recommendations. These occupations include:

  • Laboratory technicians
  • Pharmaceutical technicians
  • Boat and ship builders and repairers
  • Stonemasons
  • Bricklayers
  • Roofers
  • Care workers

Moreover, 10 additional occupations are also recommended by MAC due to the higher salary thresholds, these are:

  • Chemical and biological scientists
  • Artists
  • Musicians
  • Dancers
  • Choreographers
  • Carpenters
  • Welders

While MAC is the UK’s independent advisory body regarding immigration policy, its suggestions are not mandatory but are significantly considered and even accepted. A comprehensive review of the Immigration Salary List (ISL) is anticipated by the end of the year. However, the replacement of SOL with ISL will take effect on April 4, 2024.
