New IRCC Backlog Update | Nearly 2.2 Million Files Under Processing

On January 24, 2024, the new IRCC backlog update stated that Canada has been processing a record number of immigration and visa applications. IRCC continuously receives new applications. As of December 31, 2023, the entire application inventory reached a record number of 2,221,100 applications.

The number of new temporary residency applications, including visitor visas, work permits, and study permits, is rapidly increasing in Canada. Any application for citizenship, immigration, or a temporary visa that takes longer than the immigration department’s typical processing time generates an immigration backlog.

There is a 7.42% rise in the backlog for temporary residency applications, with the overall processing inventory increasing to 1,257,000 since the last backlog update.

Although there is a 6% decrease in the backlog for citizenship applications, there is a 7.42% rise in permanent residency applications. In comparison, there is a 6.65% increase in the overall inventory for these applications.

What are the IRCC backlog projections for 2024?

The backlogs are predicted to fall every month, according to the official IRCC forecasts for 2024.

Listed are the IRCC’s official backlog forecasts for numerous application categories by February 28, 2024:

  • The Federal High Skilled and Provincial Nominee Program (PNP via Express Entry): 15–17%
  • Citizenship and spousal sponsorship applications: 15–17%
  • Study and work permit: 32% and 36%
  • Temporary resident or visiting visas: 68%

If it is 20% or less, the IRCC meets the service standard for that particular immigration category.

What is the new IRCC backlog update?

The IRCC was handling 2,221,100 citizenship, immigration, and visa applications as of December 31, 2023, with 949,500 backlogs surpassing the IRCC’s typical service standards.

There is a nearly 6% monthly decrease in the backlog for citizenship and permanent residency applications, but it rises to almost 7.4% for temporary residency and permanent residency applications.
