134 Years Waiting Time For US Green Card Backlog

There has been an employment-based Green Card backlog in the US for Indians which has surpassed an extreme level. Studies have recently displayed that about 10.7 lakh Indians are awaiting process at the moment in EB-2 and EB-3 categories. And you will not believe what the waiting time is. It’s 134 years!

How Has This Impacted Indian Children?

The backlog of this year has gone up to 1.8 million cases which has affected around 1.34 lakh Indian children. These children may age out prior to even receiving their Green Card.

“Documented dreamers” is the term used to refer to these children and when they reach the age of 21, they will also lose their H-4 visa eligibility. Many of them face issues such as low work opportunities and high fees. Some may also give a thought to self-deportation.

What is The Root Cause?

The main issue is in the immigration policy of the US The policy only allows 140,000 Green Cards per year, it is for employment-based applicants and forces a per-country cap of around 7%.

The system has majorly impacted Indian nationals, especially those on H-1B visas. The backlog is arbitrarily limited to 7% per nation of birth instead of being equally distributed.
